Abstract

Studies shown that individual influences reflect dietary practices among various populations, including women as household foods gatekeepers. The present qualitative study aims to elicit current dietary practices that is shaped by individual factors of food choice. Main data collection obtained from in-depth interviews to eighteen (n=18) women with different self-reported BMI status. Content analysis was applied and data were analysed using Atlast.ti software for qualitative. Most women reported that they know some points of Indonesian Dietary Guideline, however they only adhere some points as they do not know the relevance for their health. Women reported that food preference was mainly influenced by eight individual factors such as health, sensory appeal, food natural content, mood, convenience, weight control, familiarity, and nutritional knowledge. This study provides ideas to foster healthier food choice among urban slum women.
